History of WKCC

The West Kootenay Camera Club is alive and well, serving camera enthusiasts for over 20 years. The club was originated by local photography hobbyists Ken Ferch and Kevin Underwood in 1989.

Digital cameras have brought a huge increase in interest in the photographic arts over the last 10 years, and as a result the club is growing. At present it has over 50 members, residing in an area encompassing Lardeau, Nelson, Castlegar, Rossland, Trail and the Beaver Valley. Membership has always included beginners as well as advanced photographers. There is a sharing of knowledge in order to become more skilled photographers, to make better use of photographic equipment and produce quality images.

Meetings

Meetings are held every second Monday (check club calendar for dates) from September to the end of June at 7 p.m. in the Castlegar Library meeting room, with a summer recess during the months of July and August. Each session has a small business component, time set aside for education including opportunities for members to share their pictures and slide shows. Of course there’s a coffee break to visit and socialize.

Activities

The club holds a monthly photo competition among members which provides for fun and is another opportunity to sharpen our skills. There are minimal rules, the entries are judged by 3 nonparticipating members and then viewed by the membership. First, second and third places are awarded with the first place winner picking the category for next month. The top image for the month is displayed on the club’s website homepage for a month.

We hold an annual Photo Show inviting the public to enter. The Photo Show starts as a juried competition with 10 categories to enter; judges are invited professional photographers from all over B.C. and just south of the border; ribbons are awarded to first, second, third and honorable mention; and end with a public exhibition of all entries at the Kootenay Galley in Castlegar, B.C. and one other venue decided upon that particular year.

Entering external competitions as a club, our annual Turkey Shoot competition at Christmas, workshops, field trips and photo outings are further avenues of learning, fun and socializing. There have been occasions when members have carpooled and traveled to a photo seminar in Spokane, WA. A self-guided field trip was included with a slide show of the participants’ images shown to the rest of the club upon return.
