The 35th Annual Photo Salon Print Competition

The West Kootenay Camera Club Photo Show returns to host is 35th annual Photo Salon print competition. It will be followed by a Photo Show at the Kootenay Gallery of Art History and Science in Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada from June 4 to 13, 2026.

The print competition invitation is open to all photographers. Entries are accepted from April 18 to May 2, 2026. Drop off and pick up locations: Kel Print , 465 Columbia Ave., Castlegar, BC, Castlegar, BC and Hall Printing, 815 Victoria Ave., Trail, BC.

Definition of Competition Category

NATURE

Plants, wild unrestrained birds, animals and insects in a natural environment. Geological formation and weather phenomena. No hybrid cultivated or mounted plants, animals or insects, or those in controlled environments such as planetarium, zoo or hot house. No hand of man.

HUMAN INTEREST

Portraits, children, dance, may include people with pets etc.

PLACES / LANDSCAPE

Landscapes, city streets, buildings, architecture, waterfalls etc.

CREATIVE

Pets, old doors, paint peeling, macro shots, flowers, patterns, altered images, abstracts, abandoned buildings etc.

BLACK & WHITE

Any category or subject matter in black and white.

AFTER DARK

Astro, aurora borealis (northern lights), light painting, fireworks, etc.

ALTERNATE MEDIA

Photographs printed on alternate materials such as wood, canvas, glass, metal etc. Panoramic photos. This category has no size restrictions, however, please be reasonable not to expand beyond what is visually necessary.

Rules and Regulations

1. ALL photos (except Alternative Media) should be printed on photo paper, then mounted on foam core or sturdy backing i.e. matte board which is to be 16” X 20”

2. All entries with text or signatures on the front or back (other than on entry forms) will be disqualified.

3. All entries (except Alternative Media) incorrectly mounted or with metal hangers or wooden/metal frames on the front or back will be disqualified.

4. Attach entry fees (in an envelope) to the back of the entry with low tack tape (e.g. painters tape). For multiple entries place fees in one envelope attached to the back of one of the entries.

5. Draw a ‘this way up’ arrow on the back of each entry showing image orientation.

6. Acceptable entry sizes:

- Maximum photo size cannot exceed 16 x 20 inches (320 square inches), flush mounted or matted.
- Minimum acceptable photo size is 11 x 14 inches (154 square inches) or equivalent square inches, must be mounted or matted on 16 x 20 foam core or backing.
- Single or double mattes are acceptable.
*Alternative media category* Please keep entry size to what is visually necessary and appealing.

7. Members may submit a total of 10 entries, non members a total of 5 entries. Both members and non members may not submit more than 2 photos per category.

8. The entrant must be the sole creator of all elements in the entry.

9. Greyscale and monochrome photos are acceptable only in the Black and White category. See definitions on West Kootenay Camera Club website.

10. Entries may be retrieved from the Kootenay Gallery at the show’s closing before 5pm on June 13, 2024 or they will be returned to their original pickup/drop-off location in Trail or Castlegar.

11. Due to space limitations in the Kootenay Gallery we may be unable to hang all entries submitted, in this case lowest scoring images would not be on display.
